Choosing Yarn and Hook for Filet Crochet
Written by the Filet Crochet Chart Builder team · Updated
Filet crochet works in almost any weight, but the material you choose changes the finished scale and how crisply the design reads. The goal is always the same: keep the filled blocks square and the open mesh clearly open.
Thread for fine work, yarn for blankets
Traditional filet uses size 10 or 20 cotton thread with a steel hook for delicate, doily-scale pieces. For a cushion, bag, or blanket, switch to DK or worsted-weight cotton with a 3.5–4.5 mm hook. The chart does not change — only the size of the finished piece.
Pick a smooth, firm cotton
Mercerised cotton is the classic choice because it has a subtle sheen and crisp stitch definition that keeps block edges sharp. Avoid fuzzy or loosely-plied yarns; halo and drape blur the boundary between block and mesh, which is exactly the contrast the design relies on.
One clear colour reads best
Filet is traditionally worked in a single solid colour so the filled and open squares carry the design. A light, well-defined colour photographs and reads best. If you want contrast, work the background in a second shade rather than colouring the motif itself.
Swatch for gauge
Because thread weight sets the finished size, make a small swatch and count how many meshes you get per inch before starting a large piece. Knowing your mesh gauge lets you predict the finished dimensions of any chart and adjust the grid size to match your project.
