Size 10 cotton thread on a steel hook makes a fine thick frame panel; switch to DK or worsted cotton with a 3.5–4 mm hook and it grows into a soft, blanket-weight piece. Pick a smooth, non-fuzzy yarn so the filled blocks stay square and the open squares stay open after blocking.
Project ideas
Use the thick frame as an even border around a name, date, or central motif. It suits a sampler border and works just as well on a name sign. Scale the grid up for a centrepiece or tile the motif for an all-over effect.
